CHOICE Review

The need for a new teaching atlas of classical history has long been apparent. Talbert's atlas, however, only partially succeeds in meeting that need. Its virtues are clear. Its 60 maps are well chosen by Talbert and 25 British scholars; there are useful maps of Homeric Greece, Greek exploration and trade, archaeological sites in Italy, and the administrative organization of Roman Egypt as well as numerous site plans, each accompanied by clear and informative notes. Unfortunately, the maps themselves, which are printed in black and white, are both unattractive and relatively uninformative. Most are outline maps, providing only limited indications of elevation and the presence of mountains. The physical maps of the Mediterranean, Greece, and Italy are small, hard to read, and lack information about vegetation, physical features other than mountains and even latitude and longitude. This work can be recommended as a useful reference work on the political, commercial, and administrative aspects of classical history. But there still remains a need for a general ancient-history atlas with maps reflecting the present state of cartographic technique. The bibliography and index are adequate. Appropriate for public, college, and university collections.-S.M. Burstein, California State University, Los Angeles
