Resumen: From the swooping concrete vaults of the TWA Terminal at JFK Airport to the 630-foot-tall Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the iconic designs of Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) captured the aspirations and values of mid-20th-century America. Potent expressions of national power, these and other Saarinen-designed structures--including the GM Technical Center, Dulles International Airport, and John Deere headquarters--helped create the international image of the United States in the decades following World War II. Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Futureoffers a new and wide-ranging look at the entire scope of Saarinen's career. This is the first book on Saarinen to incorporate significant research and materials from the newly available archives of his office, and includes the most complete portfolio of Saarinen's projects to date--a chronological survey of more than 100 built and unbuilt works, previously unpublished photographs, plans, and working drawings. Lavishly illustrated, this major study shows how Saarinen gave his structures an expressive dimension and helped introduce modern architecture to the mainstream of American practice. In his search for a richer and more varied modern architecture, Saarinen become one of the most prolific and controversial practitioners of his time.

Library Journal Review

The Finnish-born Saarinen (1910-61)-now sometimes labeled "proto-postmodern" or "of the second generation of high modernists" and known for the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the terminal buildings at JFK (NY) and Dulles (VA) airports-appears on any list of great American 20th-century architects. This is the fourth general book on Saarinen in as many years, and it easily takes the palm. Published for an exhibition traveling through 2010, it contains chronologies, a bibliography, a biography, and a portfolio of more than 100 projects, rendering it the definitive compendium on the architect. It should certainly fulfill editors Pelkonen (architecture, Yale Univ.; Achtung Architecture!) and Albrecht's (curator, architecture & design, Museum of the City of New York; The Work of Charles and Ray Eames) hope to "inspire further research." Best, six interpretive essays are delightfully personal yet not reflexively hagiographic-the authors are critical and conscious of history writing. While the book is generous to earlier writers, its richness and clarity make it superior to Jayne Merkel's Eero Saarinen and Antonio Rom n's Eero Saarinen: An Architecture of Multiplicity. The exemplary range of perspective, organization, and consequent accessibility for readers should earn it a place in all libraries.-John Hagood, National Gallery of Art Lib., Washington, DC (c) Copyright 2010. Publishers Weekly Review

Far from a household name, Saarinen's works are nonetheless internationally recognizable icons. His Gateway Arch towers 630 feet above St. Louis, welcoming visitors from across the mighty Mississippi River; the cascading vaults of his TWA terminal at JFK airport greet guests from afar. In many ways, Saarinen's architecture conveys his own experience as an immigrant in the United States; originally from Finland, Saarinen set foot in America in 1923. This elegant compendium provides a lavish array of photographs and sketches of his work, as well as an impressive collection of essays by leading architects and academics. Renowned historian Vincent Scully, for example, addresses Saarinen's role in defining modern architecture in America: by seeing the nation through foreign eyes, he writes, Saarinen understood the responsibility incumbent upon empire. This book demonstrates the many ways Saarinen, and the school of young architects from his office-Pelli, Roche and Venturi, each of them an immigrant or the child of one-hasn't just brought a unique viewpoint to bear on his adopted home, but has changed the way America views itself. CHOICE Review

This whopper of a book is about a whopper of an architect, Saarinen (1919-61), who has been called "the architect of the American Century, the 20th century." Saarinen's soaring idealism caught the prosperous Zeitgeist of America at its robust high point in the 1950s and cast it in the most memorable concrete and steel buildings of the century, most notably the towering St. Louis Gateway Arch, the futuristic TWA Terminal in New York City, and the sober CBS building in Manhattan, one of the greatest skyscrapers of the 20th century. This tome presents the result of a 2005 Yale University exhibition and symposium devoted to the architect, marking the gift to Yale of Saarinen's enormous archive of professional papers. Everything about this book is, like Saarinen himself, first-class: from the financial backing to the pictorial content to the physical production to the list of contributors, a veritable Who's Who of contemporary architectural culture. An indispensable study of an indispensable architect and a bravura performance by Yale University Press. Summing Up: Essential. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. P.
