CHOICE Review

A useful compendium of information relating the literature on sex roles with that of education about death. Early socialization in gender identity serves as a central organizing function for children-effecting them throughout life, including their attitudes and behavior surrounding death. Stillion (Western Carolina University) presents extensive evidence on how males and females view and experience death and death-related concerns. Excellent reviews of the literature are given in the areas of sex differences in longevity; sex roles and death attitudes across the life span; sex differences in murder and suicide; and the experience of bereavement and grief. A general structure is provided for death education in the home and by counselors. Useful suggestions on how modification of male sex role demands would increase male longevity are included throughout the book. Recommended for college and university collections.-C. Adamsky, University of New Hampshire
