CHOICE Review

This, the fifth edition of a much-valued undergraduate text on the judicial process, offers a comprehensive survey of the nature and function of both the federal and state judicial systems. Separate chapters are devoted to the history of the federal and state judicial systems, trial and appellate courts, criminal and civil courts, judicial policy making, and the impact of judicial decisions. A separate chapter also relates these various concerns to the different theoretical traditions used by political scientists to analyze the courts: cue theory, small group theory, attitude theory, and rational choice theory. This updated edition provides some recent examples that place US courts in comparative context and contains a glossary of legal terms used throughout the book. It should be a text for courses on the judicial process. Recommended for undergraduate students. M. M. Feeley University of California, Berkeley
