CHOICE Review

This is a large, beautifully illustrated collection of photographs of the major projects since 1981 of one of the leading contemporary architects. Each of the 61 "portfolios" contains a selection of photographs (the majority in color), of drawings and, often, of models, plans, elevations, sections, and views of executed structures, along with a half-page of text. Together these show the range, character, and international stature of the Italian architect who won the 1990 Prizker Prize. In addition, there are very brief essays on limited aspects of Rossi's architecture by Diane Ghirardo and Karen Stein, an even briefer introduction by Adjmi (a sometime collaborator), a brief comment by Rossi, a chronology (with tiny black-and-white photographs) of all of his projects since 1959 (including furniture and other products), a biographical outline, a listing of exhibitions, and an extensive bibliography. Although an excellent survey of his major projects of the 1980s and early '90s, with valuable guides to his earlier work and writings by and about Rossi, this is not a critical study of his work or a true monograph, for which there is none covering much of this work.
