CHOICE Review

Marini and Stebnicki, both professors and scholars in rehabilitation counseling, have compiled an extremely useful and practical counseling resource covering a variety of topics. These include the expected (clinical supervision and counseling ethics) and the unexpected (empathy fatigue, expert testimony, and counselor burnout). Readers will find the 84 chapters well written and succinct, with surprisingly little overlap. Although the title implies that professional counselors are the main audience, undergraduates, graduate students, and new counselors will find this a valuable tool. Even those studying for licensure exams will notice that topics are designed to correspond with the CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) and CORE (Council on Rehabilitation Education) accreditation standards. For the most part, chapters are written by experts in the field, but surprisingly, two chapters are written solely by doctoral students. Topics that do not receive a great deal of coverage include Internet counseling (only briefly mentioned in the credentialing chapter), suicide intervention (in bits and pieces throughout the book), counseling internships, and electronic resources such as PsycINFO (CH, May'06, 43-5037), ERIC (CH, Sup'01, 38Sup-496), and Mental Measurements Yearbook (online version, CH, Feb'08, 45-2974). A minor error is the misspelling of "Myers-Briggs" as "Meyers-Briggs" in the index. However, these oversights should not dampen one's enthusiasm for this informative, handy tome. This unique volume is a great addition for college and university libraries. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through professionals/practitioners. K.
