Library Journal Review

Contributions by an impressive group of over 200 scholars from academia, medicine, and health-related agencies have been compiled for this first encyclopedia devoted to the topic of aging. By minimizing specialized terminology, the editors have succeeded in providing, for the educated reader and nonspecialist, a compendium of nearly 500 terms and concepts related to the aging process. A significant portion of the encyclopedia consists of over 2000 references to sources cited in the text. A comprehensive index, attractive format, and a few appropriate illustrations and tables add to the overall excellence and usefulness of the work. This will prove an authoritative reference source for all libraries serving students or professionals in the many disciplines that bear upon gerontology. Stanley P. Hodge, Ball State Univ. CHOICE Review

This second edition provides nearly 550 articles covering the field of gerontology. Approximately 70 percent of the material is new or revised. Associate editors specializing in nursing care and social work have been added to the editorial staff. Maddox, now editor in chief, and seven associate editors have assembled a cadre of scholars--invited professionals in the fields of biology, medicine, nursing, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and social services. There is additional emphasis in this edition on long-term care, health, geriatric nursing, and international topics. The articles are clearly written and are intended for general readers. Entries are arranged alphabetically, average two to four pages in length, and end with cross-references. The uneven coverage that was characteristic of the first edition has been largely eliminated. There are indexes of subjects and contributors. A list of entries at the beginning of the volume provides an overview of topics covered. The bibliography, more than 200 pages, is one of the most comprehensive available. This broad introduction to the field of aging is recommended for academic and general libraries. C.
