School Library Journal Review

This slim manual is packed with useful advice. Solomon, a library services manager for the Ohio Public Information Network, sprinkles her account with real-world examples of the power of libraries leveraging social media. She makes a strong case for establishing social-media accounts, stressing the importance of setting goals before beginning, as well as describing the different kinds of accounts. Discussions about branding, social capital, and other strategies for success are especially important. Wrapping up with chapters on statistics and whether the investment of time and effort is worthwhile, Solomon gives libraries the knowledge they need to proceed on their own. Equally relevant for librarians developing a professional presence online, this guide fully covers the world of social media. For any librarian who feels lost in this area, this book will be a lifeline.-Melissa Rabey, Frederick County Public Libraries, MD (c) Copyright 2011. Booklist Review

Author Solomon knows how to do social media. She was instrumental in saving much of the $147 million budget reductions directed at libraries announced by the Ohio governor in June 2009, and she did this by mobilizing library supporters through Twitter and other social media sites. Her book is organized in seven chapters, and sprinkled throughout are sections entitle. Bottom Lin. that reiterate for the reader the essential concept within each chapter. Strategies for Social Media Succes. is probably the most valuable chapter, as it gives actual examples of how social media can be transformative in organizations. The book gives both the novice and the experienced social media practitioner advice on how to use these virtual-communications tools more effectively and is recommended for any library desiring to increase the social media effectiveness quotient of the staff.--Carbone, Jerr.
