School Library Journal Review

Gr 8-12-- Sports injuries are common among young adults, and there is definitely a need for a book on how to cope with them. Unfortunate ly, this is not it. Clayton and Smith do provide some sound advice, such as listening to your body, warming up, stretching, and resting an injury properly, but readers have to wade through an unbelievable amount of filler to get to these few tidbits of information. Approxi mately half of the book is devoted to bogus case studies. Statistics are freely dispensed, with no citations to back them up, and a whole chapter is devoted to analyzing sports cliches. The chapter on dealing with permanent inju ries does not discuss physical or emotional ad justments, but instead offers alternative ca reers. There is not enough here to warrant purchasing this book. --George Delalis, Oak land Public Library, CA ) (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Booklist Review

Gr. 6-12. Sports-related injuries are a major health concern, and the authors emphasize that many can be prevented by off-season exercise, proper conditioning, and awareness of avoidable risks. They discuss such vital areas as the physical and emotional consequences of injuries and the importance of age-appropriate training and realistic expectations. Unfortunately, the text is sprinkled with sexist comments ("She had an incredible spike for a female"), simplistic advice ("DO NOT GET HOOKED ON DRUGS!"), and cliches ("Dealing with injuries is no picnic"). Also, the text is unrelieved by illustrations. ~--Sheilamae O'Hara
