Mullen (Latin American art and architecture, U. of Texas) visited nearly every pueblo in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca with any large public architecture, and found that every church not destroyed by earthquake, regardless of age, was still in use, many bearing Mesoamerican sacred symbols not previously recognized except by the native people. His evidence for the continuity of religious and cultural values since pre-Columbian times is combined with documentation of founding dates based on archival sources, discoveries of hundred of structures, and the identification of an architect of the 16th century whose genius could have rivaled his most renowned contemporaries in Europe. Profusely illustrated in black and white. A sequel to Mullen's Dominican Architecture in 16th-century Oaxaca (1975). Published by the Arizona State University Center for Latin American Studies, Box 872401, Tempe, AZ 85287-2401. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
