CHOICE Review

In this study of family caregivers, the authors examine the differences and similarities in the roles and needs of individuals caring for dependent family members with five different chronic, progressive illnesses: carcinoma, cardiac disorders, cerebral vascular accidents, Alzheimer's disease, and mental illness. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is not addressed. The authors draw on several theories, including family systems theory, general systems theory, and stress theories, and discuss various intervention models. They review and synthesize relevant current research, including their own. Not cited are the works of Jaber F. Gubrium (e.g., The Mosaic of Care: Frail Elderly and Their Families in the Real World (CH, Apr'91). The book is heavily documented and contains annotations of studies of intervention support groups. This well-written and high-quality volume is recommended for students and professionals in the health and allied health fields. V. L. Norman University of North Dakota
