Booklist Review

Schauer maintains that modern libraries are economic entities and that their administrators are faced with the same principles and problems governing business. In the first section of the book, he analyzes microeconomic theory in the library market, pointing out how it relates to consumer preferences, production, and supply of services. He continues with a discussion of how the mathematical formulas used by economists can be applied to the decision-making process in libraries. Some readers may find the economic theory heavy going, but Schauer does a commendable job of connecting abstract concepts with the daily realities of library work. Beneath the mathematical formulas and complex charts there is a bedrock of common sense that will appeal to even those librarians who tend to be put off by phrases such as ``the slope of the isoquant.'' Bibliographies appear at the end of chapters; index. SKB. 025.1'1 Library finance / Library science Economic aspects / Library administration Economic aspects / Microeconomics [CIP] 86-14186
