Library Journal Review

Technical services encompass everything from electronic resources management to the mundane tasks of book repair. Advances in technology challenge practitioners to keep up with electronic and audiovisual formats while still dealing with nondigitized material. Depending on the size of the library, the work may fall on one person or be shared between several units. Sandstrom (acquisitions librarian, New Mexico State Univ.) and Miller (cataloging librarian, New Mexico State Univ.) provide an orientation to technical services, targeting readers with no previous experience in the field. While Sandra Hirsh's Information Services Today provides an overview of all library functions and career opportunities, Fundamentals focuses specifically on the behind-the-scenes work that supports libraries' public service points. Management theory, a glossary, and appendixes addressing content standards, classification systems, and MARC digital format also make this book of value to librarians who are new to this area of librarianship. Mary Beth Weber's Rethinking Library Technical Services would serve as a good companion to stimulate classroom discussion. VERDICT A practical introduction to the components of technical services supporting libraries' goals in efficient provision of information resources to end users.-Betty J.
