A clinically-oriented examination of bereavement, focusing on practical aspects of caregiving to those suffering from grief and loss. Presents the ``Integrative Theory of Bereavement,'' which describes the phases of grief after the death of a loved one and serves as a basis for interventions appropriate to various situations during the course of bereavement. Discusses social factors such as age, sex, religiosity, suicide, stigmatic death, concurrent crises and other factors that can complicate bereavement. Also reviews other theories of bereavement, beginning with the early psychodynamic analytic approaches and moving up to the current understanding of grief as a psychobiological process.

CHOICE Review

Many books have been written on grief by mental health experts: Sigmund Freud's Mourning and Melancholia (1957) and Otto Fenichel's The Psychoanalytic Theory of Neurosis (1945), to name two early volumes; and John Bowlby's Attachment and Loss (CH, Feb '70) and R.A. Kalich's Death, Grief, and Caring Relationships (CH, May '81) to name two more recent books. The uniqueness of this book is that the author draws on an empirical study known as the Tampa (Florida) Study, which went on for nearly 15 years. The book is logically developed: the first two chapters deal with background and theoretical material; the next five chapters deal with the various phases of grief (shock, conservation or withdrawal, healing and renewal) and so forth; the last chapter discusses the practical applications of the need for intervention, the appropriate kind of intervention, and the needs of the bereaved. In some ways the final section is the best part of the book. Unusually well done, it probably has the strongest appeal for the general reader and college and university students. -R. J. Howell, Brigham Young University
