CHOICE Review

The British authors--a child psychologist and a sociologist--bring fresh perspectives to major modern children's classics by Philippa Pearce, Lynne Reid Banks, Nina Bawden, Paula Fox, Rumer Godden, Russell Hoban, C.S. Lewis, E. Nesbit, Mary Norton, and E.B. White. The title, with its tension between separation and reintegration, suggests their focus: how do seemingly naive children's stories reflect the emotional complexities of typical childhood experience, so that they appeal both with an entertaining surface narrative and with deep, powerful emotional resonance? One is reminded of Bruno Bettelheim's Freudian study of fairytale (The Uses of Enchantment, CH, Oct '76), yet the Rustins apply Melanie Klein's psychoanalytic viewpoint with much more persuasive subtlety and insight. There are substantial literary analyses of metaphoric and narrative structure; sociological interpretations are incorporated to reinforce the complexity of the imaginative situation and of the character's struggles to learn and grow. Whereas scholarly journals include numerous psychological studies of individual characters in children's books, this wide-ranging book addresses both particular works and the genre as a whole, raising critical questions about the roles of fantasy and play, of storytelling figures, of the necessity for loss and humility to allow for the enrichment of love. Strongly recommended for literature and child psychology students at graduate and upper-division undergraduate levels and for public libraries building children's collections. C.
