CHOICE Review

Until recently, Caribbeanist anthropologists could rarely find a willing publisher for books about islands small in size and population, though books on Barbados, Trinidad, and the Greater Antilles were acceptable. The exceptions were M.G. Smith's Kinship and Community in Carriacou (1962) and J.Y. Keur and D.L. Keur's Windward Children (Assen, 1960). Change began in the 1970s, and we have since had Peter J. Wilson's Crab Antics (CH, Nov '73), Stuart B. Philpott's West Indian Migration (1973), Frank Manning's Black Clubs of Bermuda (1972), and Karin F. Olwig's Cultural Adaptation and Resistance on St. John (CH, Sep '86), to name some good ones that represent varied methodologies. Rubenstein's ethnography of St. Vincent employs cultural ecology and interprets the important features of social and economic organization as adaptations to chronic poverty. This is traditional rather than innovative ethnography, but it is thoroughly researched and readable. Rubenstein (University of Manitoba) corrects a genuine deficit in the literature. For all four-year college and university libraries.-R. Berleant-Schiller, University of Connecticut
