Library Journal Review

This lively survey by the author of A Concise History of Architecture ( LJ 7/79) examines architecture as a cultural phenomenon as well as an artistic and technological achievement. Roth (architecture, Univ. of Oregon) argues that architecture does more than provide shelter; it is also a physical expression of how people view themselves in relation to each other and to the universe. Part 1 provides a solid introduction to the discipline's form and function; Part 2 focuses on the major buildings, styles, and architects from prehistoric times to the present, with a valuable historical overview opening each chapter. Non-Western and vernacular architecture are mentioned only in passing, the one small shortcoming in an otherwise readable and lucid book. Highly recommended.-- H. CHOICE Review

Roth has always been a very readable author, whose books provide chapter summaries and headings/subheadings. His books on American design history are standards in many libraries. In the present work, he expands his field to all of Western architecture. Comparable books include Spiro Kostof's A History of Architecture: Settings and Rituals (CH, Dec'86) and Marvin Trachtenberg and Isabelle Hyman's Architecture from Prehistory to Post-Modernism/The Western Tradition (1986). Roth's book is different in that the first chapters of the book are divided into the Vitruvian triad of Firmness, Commodite, and Delight followed by the Architect-High Priest to Professional, Architecture-Environment, and Architecture-Memory and Economics. This allows the reader to puruse the book in either a thematic way or, in the later chapters, a traditional art history manner. Filled with the usual maps, plans, notes, suggested reading, etc., Roth's book is an excellent addition to any library, though a future edition should have more color and a longer 20th-century chapter and should include non-Western examples. General readers; all undergraduates; pre-professional students. G. F. Hisel; University of Kentucky
