CHOICE Review

A psychologist at North East London Polytechnic, Richards has written an idiosyncratic, dilettante's account of human evolution. The closest counterpart of this book would be Bernard Campbell's Human Evolution (3rd ed., 1985). Richards approaches the topic from the perspective of a behavioral psychologist. Although the book is well written, its coverage of topics ranges from telegraphic to encyclopedic. For instance, there are a 56-page chapter on the ``history'' of physical anthropology, and 6 pages on prehistoric art. By contrast, topics of crucial importance-such as contemporary evolutionary theory and molecular anthropology-merit only half a dozen pages. Moreover, discussions of primate behavior and hominid fossils encompass no more than a dozen pages. The coverage of behavioral topics is adequate, but offers nothing particularly original. Overall, for most readers Campbell's text is a much better choice.-M.R. Feldesman, Portland State University
