Booklist Review

Librarianship is a career that requires lifelong learning. This book discusses the role of the trainer as internal consultant and change agent. To that end, it contextualizes learning largely in terms of organizational needs. Most of the book uses a cozy narrative approach, sharing the experiences of successful libraries such as Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, Contra Costa County Library, and ASTD Mount Diablo Chapter. Topics include preparation, delivery, follow-up, and trainer training. A nod is given to online environments. The focus seems to be on trainers themselves, as the authors talk about their own situations and share the comments of their counterparts. However, the term handbook is a bit misleading since the book does not do full justice to the design and implementation of training in its many formats.--Farmer, Lesley Copyright 2010 Booklist
