School Library Journal Review

Gr 6-8-- Structured in the typical ``self-help'' format, this book offers a variety of positive suggestions on how to approach problems that might be faced by those with disabled siblings. Written in a clear, straightforward style, the concepts presented are clarified with short commentaries from children. Despite the fact that the text is relentlessly cheerful, the ideas presented are sound; most, however, are not new. Beyond the framework of siblings of the disabled, there seems to be little originality in the information offered. With that foundation removed, the book is largely a compilation of the Norman Vincent Peale approach to problem-solving and to life. While this may be helpful for certain children in certain situations, it runs the risk of trivializing the deep emotional turmoil that may result from having a disabled family member. A list of organizations for specific disabilities and an extensive list for further reading are appended. In the hands of a skilled therapist, the book might be of use. Undertaken alone, however, it runs the risk of fostering the idea that complex problems have simple solutions. --Constance A.
