CHOICE Review

The Records of the Federal Convention of 1787, ed. by Max Farrand and originally published in 1911, is the only complete documentary account of the writing of the US Constitution of 1787. The original three volumes were reprinted in 1937 along with a fourth supplementary volume. Farrand collected there the materials that had come to light since the original publication, and also provided a comprehensive index to the four volumes. Some important new source material has been discovered in the 50 years since the publication of Volume 4 of the Records, especially the convention notes of John Lansing Jr. and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney. Much of this material has been uncovered over the past two decades by Leonard Rapport of the National Archives and, more recently, by James Hutson of the Library of Congress. The new volume, the Supplement, supersedes the old volume for all practical purposes; all libraries that own the original set will want to purchase this book. The Supplement is an indispensable reference work for the study of the Constitution. The editing has been done with care and elegance, and the comprehensive index has been redone, retaining references to both Volume 4 and the Supplement. A must purchase.-S.N.
