Aimed at a new generation of architects who take technology for granted but seek to understand the principles of what makes a building meaningful and enduring, The Elements of Modern Architecture features 50 buildings by the best-known and -recognized modern architects.

Constructions by Aalto, Gehry, Le Corbusier, Hadid and many others are represented in illustrations that explore all facets of the building's creation. Starting from its site, each building is analysed through its surroundings, use of natural light, volumes and massing; its programme and circulation; its details, fenestration and ornamentation, taking the reader straight to the heart and mind of the architect.

Targeted at rising students and architects who seek to create architecture that transcends digital tools and techniques, The Elements of Modern Architecture is an essential reference and inspiration for many generations to come.

CHOICE Review

For this expanded version of their 2014 compendium (CH, Oct'14, 52-0592), the authors (all, Univ. of Adelaide, Australia) added five entries from Colombia, South Africa, Turkey, and China, bringing the total of buildings covered to 55. Those included (all built since 1951) are important and thoughtfully selected. Well suited to foundation courses in architectural design, the book opens with an essay on the pedagogical benefits of studying the "how" of buildings through annotated diagrams explaining wholes, parts, and "responsive cohesion"--the relation between a building's internal components and external context. Each chapter is devoted to one building, and all chapters begin uniformly with a brief essay, a location map, and a full-page black-and-white photograph. Regrettably, the authors' graduate students contributed the annotated diagrams, which do not share a consistent set of criteria. Useful end matter includes further reading on each entry and a list of common themes; the latter would have served readers better if located within the introduction. Readily recognizable by its red highlights and awkward landscape format, the volume is too unwieldy to carry around easily. This updated edition would be more useful in an open-access, electronic, tabular format. Though the book is appropriate for design courses, those who own the first edition need not acquire this one. Summing Up: Optional. Lower-division undergraduates; students in technical programs. --Paul Glassman, Yeshiva University
