Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

In this second edition of their classic volume, the authors present their elder abuse diagnosis and intervention model. This comprehensive model of detection, assessment, and intervention enables the practitioner first to identify the type of elder mistreatment, including physical, sexual, psychological, and financial. It then provides systematic and realistic interventions. This updated edition also includes information on legal interventions with suggestions on how the practitioner should act in the courtroom, give testimony, document findings, and prepare for legal involvement with the criminal justice system. Actual legal tools are included in the appendix. This is a classic resource for all health professionals who work with the elderly.

Includes index.

Bibliography: p. 301-311.

CHOICE Review

Quinn, a nurse and court investigator, and Tomita, a social worker, have produced a useful addition to the literature on elder care. Their book has two major components: the first is a succinct and informative overview of elder abuse research and definitions, replete with numerous case vignettes that make the problem vivid. The presentation is unique in its inclusion of information on financial abuse as well as psychological and physical abuse of the elderly. Also noteworthy is their consideration of social factors such as sexism, ageism, and greed as causal factors in elder abuse. In the second section of the book, Quinn and Tomita move from a presentation of research to addressing social work practitioners, who are given detailed instruction in the specifics of handling suspected elder-abuse cases. These specifics include diagnostic tools that have had widespread use. The authors cover both social work treatment and legal intervention. The final chapter describes the effect of this type of work on social workers, and how they can protect themselves from stress. The book opens with a foreword by Senator Claude Pepper and concludes with eight appendixes of assessment and legal forms useful for practitioners. There is a ten-page reference list. Succinctly written, the book is produced on heavy paper that will withstand the amount of use this work deserves. Upper-division undergraduates and above.-S. Reinharz, Brandeis University
