John Polkinghorne, an international figure known both for his contributions to the field of theoretical elementary particle physics and for his work as a theologian, has over the years filled a bookshelf with writings devoted to specific topics in science and religion. In this new book, he undertakes for the first time a survey of all the major issues at the intersection of science and religion, concentrating on what he considers the essential insights for each. Clearly and without assuming prior knowledge, he addresses causality, cosmology, evolution, consciousness, natural theology, divine providence, revelation, and scripture. Each chapter also provides references to his other books in which more detailed treatments of specific issues can be found.

For those who are new to what Polkinghorne calls "one of the most significant interdisciplinary interactions of our time," this volume serves as an excellent introduction. For readers already familiar with John Polkinghorne's books, this latest is a welcome reminder of the breadth of his thought and the subtlety of his approach in the quest for truthful understanding.

Library Journal Review

Polkinghorne (former president, Queens' Coll., Univ. of Cambridge; Belief in God in an Age of Science) is one of the most eminent writers to bridge the oft-warring disciplines of science and theology, having made significant contributions to the field of particle physics and, as an Anglican priest, having written numerous works of theology. Here he takes up, with clarity and concision, such vexed questions as causality, time, evolution, and consciousness in ways that integrate the latest understandings of science but also acknowledge a role for mystery and the work of God. VERDICT Loathed by Richard Dawkins and A.C. Grayling, Polkinghorne is the most gentlemanly champion that reasoned religion has; this brief and elegant discussion will be fodder for many conversations among interested atheists, agnostics, and believers. CHOICE Review

Polkinghorne, a distinguished Oxford University physicist and Anglican priest, here presents a scholarly introduction to the manner in which science and Christian theology intersect in their common quest for truth. Convinced that both disciplines seek truth, he insists that each appeals to legitimate methodologies, though searching in the final analysis for answers to different questions, and that the appropriate relationship between them should be based on dialogue. Focusing on physics while granting brief attention to other sciences, the author offers a superb summary of the present state of scientific scholarship. By its very nature, theology does not easily lend itself to such summarization, and the author's presentation is clearly shaped by his own construction--only one of various possible constructions of Christian theology today. Nonetheless, his discussion of the ways in which science and theology encounter each other in their search for truth will appeal to theologians taking other approaches to their discipline. Though the author is concerned with the specific relationship of Christian theology and science, a brief postscript suggests issues that arise as other faiths engage in the dialogue. This is an excellent introduction for serious individuals seeking a better understanding of these matters. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, practitioners, and general readers. S. C. Pearson emeritus, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville
