Architecture in Times of Need focuses on the redevelopment of New Orleans' vibrant Lower Ninth Ward which was severely devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In 2006 Brad Pitt founded the Make It Right Foundation together with GRAFT, Bill McDonough, and Cherokee. They invited a group of high-profile and influential international architects set about developing affordable, green housing for the area, incorporating the latest in innovative and sustainable design. The projects by David Adjaye, GRAFT, MVRDV, and Shigeru Ban, among others, are shown in numerous photographs and renderings with sketches, building plans, and informative commentary by the architects. Along with an interview with Brad Pitt on his motivation to start the Make It Right Foundation to help in New Orleans' reconstruction, the book also includes essays on the overall design process and describes the sustainable Cradle to Cradle approach, which seeks to maximize economic, ecological, and social value by following principles inspired by nature. Architecture in Times of Need also features the Pink Project, a unique effort that directly connects monetary donations to the assemblage of houses. It brings to fruition an idea based on real needs and real people, and in reaction to a natural disaster, the recurrence of which is all too possible. AUTHOR: KRISTIN FEIREISS is an author, architectural critic, and curator. She has edited numerous publications in the field of architecture. In 1980 she founded Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin, now one of the most successful institutions worldwide communicating architectural culture and urban design. 300 illustrations

CHOICE Review

This dense, informative book includes essays, photographs, and diagrams about the people, decisions, problems, aims, standards, architectural plans, and mid-2009 progress of the Make It Right (MIR) project initiated by actor Brad Pitt to build sustainable, "green," affordable, safe homes in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward. This low-income neighborhood (60 percent home ownership) was devastated during the 53 levee breaks that followed Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. Pitt partnered with architects expert in nontoxic materials and the utilization of rainwater and the sun's energy and with homeowners and scholars. They established basic, homeowner-driven criteria, e.g., that houses be engineered to withstand hurricanes and flood surges. New Orleans' long, narrow lots made shotgun cottages a design prototype. Local, national, and international firms were selected through an architectural competition, homeowners contributed monies, and MIR provided "gap" financing. The 20 finished homes have box-like fronts, oddly angled rooflines, and differing east and west elevations; they relate to shotgun cottages but are a different breed. Interiors are light and airy, and energy costs are dramatically reduced. As participants gained experience, adjustments were made, costs reduced, and greater affordability achieved. The aim is to solve immediate problems and to provide workable models that can be emulated elsewhere--even internationally. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates through professionals/practitioners; general readers. J. J. Poesch emerita, Tulane University
