CHOICE Review

The "windows" the authors refer to in the title are grids (managerial windows) that visually depict different types of organization conditions faced by managers, varying degrees of these conditions, and their implications. These 2X2 grids are dual-classification schemes that identify and then combine two interrelated dimensions. Newstrom and Pierce (both of the University of Minnesota, Duluth) present "windows" that address 20 critical business areas relevant to decision making, crisis management, motivation, conflict resolution, leadership styles, employee attitudes, corporate ethics, and strategic planning. For each window, the authors discuss the topic on which the model focuses; analyze the elements and situations depicted in the grid; review the practical application of each "window pane"; present realistic scenarios of how the window has been or could be used; and suggest additional readings. This book represents the merging of theory and practice into an extremely readable work. A good addition to either a professional or academic library. -E. Garaventa, College of Staten Island, CUNY
