CHOICE Review

This volume starts with a history of botanical classification from the time of the hunters-gatherers to the present. It presents details of the development of modern nomenclature through molecular-phylogenetic classification. One chapter considers the concept of species and speciation; another discusses the various types of floras of the world and includes beautiful colored photographs to illustrate the discussion. The evolutionary changes that have occurred in plants from algae to angiosperms are presented with details of the evolutionary classification of seed plants, including keys to various orders and families. The volume concludes with a detailed presentation of 113 families--noting the size, description, useful members, and placement in the systems of Engler, Cronquist, Thorne, and Dahlgren; it includes line drawings and photographs of distinctive parts. Accompanying the book is a CD-ROM with colored photographs of selected species from the families discussed, keys for orders and families, and a list of common names and corresponding binomials for all of the illustrated species and useful plants cited. This is a valuable book for anyone with some background in plant taxonomy. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Graduate students through researchers/faculty. C. T. Mason Jr. emeritus, University of Arizona
