Part of the "pink tide" sweeping Latin America, Ollanta Humala is one of the new leaders arguing for a politically sovereign and economically integrated continent. Like Venezuela's Hugo Chávez, Humala led a military rebellion and is similarly of indigenous heritage. He also shares Chávez's vision of an integrated Latin America.

Here he discusses his humble background and his political formation as he reveals his perspectives for real change in Peru and Latin America.

Library Journal Review

Humala is a controversial former soldier, presidential candidate, and leader of the Peruvian Nationalist Party. Journalist Perez Almodovar has worked extensively throughout the world, including the Canary Islands, the Middle East, and Egypt. Here they use a Q&A format to describe Humala's life, work, and thoughts on the events and political personalities that have shaped the history of Peru in recent decades. Humala discusses his military career, the leadership roles he played in the uprising at Locumbra (violent protests against Alberto Fujimori's government), and his present aspirations. Humala is considered a top contender for the 2011 elections, up against former first daughter, Keiko Fujimori. Organized chronologically and somewhat informal in tone, the book blends coverage of key political events, such as the war against the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path), with glimpses of Humala's personal life. An adequate addition for academic libraries or where South American politics/history is popular.-Marie St. Pierre, Thornton, Colorado (c) Copyright 2010. Notas de autor provistas por Syndetics

OLLANTA HUMALA retired from the armed forces of Peru as a Lieutenant Colonel after leading a non-violent military revolt against the corrupt regime of Alberto Fujimori in 2002. He gained a creditable vote when he ran for president in the 2006 elections, but lost in the second round to Alan García. He is president of the Partido Nacionalista Peruano.
