CHOICE Review

Written by a psychiatrist and a clinical psychologist (US Vietnam veteran), this book covers the history of US military involvement with Vietnam, varieties of war experience for the US soldiers who fought there, reactions to returning from the war, and the psychological effects of that war on these veterans. The development and application of a clinical diagnostic category of ``post-traumatic stress disorder'' to describe the effects of the war on psychologically disabled veterans is discussed historically. This volume provides a more popular and anecdotal account of the psychological effects of the Vietnam War than the recent Trauma and Its Wake: The Study and Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, ed. by Charles R. Figley (see below). Other psychological and popular literature on the Vietnam experience is frequently footnoted, and a final chapter lists veterans' centers in the US providing counseling for Vietnam veterans. Undergraduates at all levels as well as general readers.-D.A. Davis, Haverford College
