CHOICE Review

This extravagant production and well-documented study chronicles the lives and work of Charles Eames (1907-78) and his wife Ray (1912-88) in incredible detail with extensive notes and bibliography. Marilyn Neuhart and husband John Neuhart knew the Eames office in "various capacities, both professional and personal" (introduction) from l957 to 1978. Designers, associates, craftspeople, office workers, and staff are included. Eero Saarinen and Harry Bertoia are the most famous. This book describes the foibles of all. The Neuharts follow the Eames's development of furniture, films, toys, graphics, and exhibitions from l941 to 1978, along with their design, fabrication, and marketing. Black-and-white and color pictures ranging from snapshots to studio-composed layouts include offices, factories and surroundings, interiors and exteriors, sketches, models, patent drawings, brochures, advertisements, Eames's and associates' houses, and the famous furniture. Included is much technical material about industrial processes, particularly mass-production techniques in plywood, metal, and plastics. The authors detail the importance of the Herman Miller Company, which produced many designs, and other companies associated with Eames. Eames was a major influence on American furniture and design from the l940s to the l970s, and this set is a significant addition to the study of furniture and industrial production in the US. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and above; general readers. W. L. Whitwell formerly, Hollins College
