School Library Journal Review

Gr 9-12-- While some of this information is useful, it is not enough to make the book a worthwhile purchase. Many of the drugs discussed are directly related to athletic activity, but the inclusion of others is questionable. The fact that heroin is listed as a painkiller shows how out of touch the author is. She also refers to benzodiazepines, or tranquilizers, as bennies. ``Bennies'' is slang for benzedrine, an amphetamine, which is the opposite of a tranquilizer. Anabolic steroids, which relate more to the subject, are discussed only in general terms. Not one type of anabolic steroid is mentioned by name, although less popular types of growth hormones are covered extensively. The text is loaded with technical jargon; most of these terms are defined in context, but there is no glossary, so it is difficult to find the definition when the word is reused later in the book. The constant use of such terminology becomes overwhelming and ultimately confusing. The format is unattractive, and there are no diagrams or illustrations. Much of the text is repetitious. Considering all of the information given, Nelson provides only two footnotes, and a few vague references, in context, to other articles or studies. There is no bibliography. --George Delalis, Oakland Public Library, CA (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
