Cuba's artistic tradition is as rich as its history, though its treasures are rarely appreciated outside of the country. This catalog, accompanying an exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, gathers paintings, drawings and photography from Cuba done over the past century and a half. In addition to hundreds of works on paper, it features revealing photographs'some never before published'that record the country's wars of independence and revolution, its utopian endeavours and social realities. Numerous essays explore aspects of the Cuban visual arts such as nineteenthcentury landscapes and photojournalism, the burgeoning of the arte nuevo period, Wifredo Lam's seminal Africaninspired images, the creation of the famed collective mural, Castro-era poster art and the emergence of a new generation of artists. This book chronicles a unique culture of synthesis, born at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and the Americas, and whose art bears witness to important historical events of the past 150 years.

"This catalogue accompanies the exhibition presented by the Montreal Museum of Fines Arts in partnership with the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Fototeca de Cuba in Havana.--P. [4] of cover.

Library Journal Review

This catalog accompanies an important exhibition mounted at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) in partnership with the Museum Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Fototeca de Cuba, both in Havana. In it, short essays edited by MMFA director Bondil and authored by museum curators and experts explore the significant artistic movements defining Cuban fine art, photography, and graphic arts over the past 150 years, paying special attention to works by the African Cuban painter Wilfredo Lam as well as Walker Evans's documentary photography for The Crime of Cuba (1933). Though somewhat uneven in style and readability, the essays are informative, besides which the work's reference value outweighs this minor issue. Time lines, 450 color illustrations, biographical notes for the 140 represented artists, and a selective bibliography further make this a rich and visually riveting acquisition suitable for both academic and public libraries.--Nancy B. Booklist Review

*Starred Review* Cuba holds a unique place in world history, and in our imaginations, but we've known little about the island nation's visual arts until the arrival of this dynamic joint production of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Cuba's Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and Fototeca de Cuba. Incisive essays, useful time lines, and 450 ravishing illustrations chronicle a century and a half of Cuban drawing, painting, graphic art, and photographs. Cuban art thrives on diversity and a transcendent belief in life for life's sake. From romantic landscapes and sensual portraits to the complex paintings of Wilfredo Lam and the powerful political art of Alberto Pena and Marcelo Pogolotti, Cuban painting draws on influences African, Caribbean, and European to respond to conquest and war, the tyranny of poverty and ideology. Gorgeous art deco magazine covers embody a sense of hope and love of glamour, while in-your-face posters protest a far more complicated reality, and potent photographs document high-rolling nightlife, the fervor of the revolution, and sweet and painful moments on the streets and in the countryside. This momentous, dazzling volume interweaves history, biography, and artistic expression to explicate Cuba's distinctive vibrancy and glorious creativity.--Seaman, Donna Copyright 2008 Booklist
