CHOICE Review

A technical treatment of seed dispersal including such topics as dispersal by water; fruit-eating bats and mammals; rodents as consumers and dispensers; and fire in relation to seed dispersal. The evolution of seed dispersal syndromes based on the fossil record is covered, as is the aerodynamics of propagule movement. Four of the authors are from Australia, four from the US, and one from England, which gives the book a truly cosmopolitan flavor. Editor Murray has done a fine job in uniformly keeping the standards high in regard to subject matter. Chapter summaries are included in most cases; tables, figures and photographs enhance the book; and extensive bibliographies accompany the various contributions. College libraries and other botanical institutions will find this a most worthy addition to their collection.-W.A. Niering, Connecticut College
