Booklist Review

Gr. 7-10. Examples (most sound quite authentic) are the heart of this book. Personalizing material in a way that will keep readers' attention, they debunk myths and illustrate, in general but distinctive terms, how a variety of learning disorders affect school performance, personal relationships, and self-esteem. Medical-psychological descriptors are used throughout most of the text, with educational terminology (something teens in special programs may want or need to know) discussed in a separate chapter. A chart helps readers determine their learning patterns, but instead of skill-strengthening exercises, the authors offer a roundup of homilies--"Believe in yourself"; "Don't give up your dream." More helpful are the insights into individualized education programs and the various ways families respond to a member who learns differently. The concluding chapter identifies individuals who have triumphed despite learning disorders, among them Einstein and Beethoven; unfortunately, the contemporary individuals listed are mainly entertainers and sports figures. A more diverse list would have better served readers. No notes; a list of further reading is appended. ~--Stephanie Zvirin
