CHOICE Review
This small volume profiles about 20 of the major commissions of the well-known French architect Jean Nouvel. Morgan includes the Cite Justiciare in Nantes, the Arab Institute in Paris, and the Opera House in Lyon, France. Nouvel is one of the principal "High Tech" architects of Europe, a cutting-edge designer of gridded glass blocks, fulfilling the modernist dream of ubiquitous functional spaces lit by staggering glass walls. Several books have already appeared on his work, including Jean Nouvel, Architecture and Design, 1976-1995 (1997), and Olivier Boissiere, Jean Nouvel (1996). Nouvel is not as well known as his contemporaries who practice in the same High Tech vein of fully industrialized buildings, the Italian Renzo Piano, or the Englishman Norman Foster. His work lacks the imagination of Piano, a Leonardo of architecture, and the clumsiness of Foster, somewhat of a plumber of architecture. Instead, Nouvel produces buildings that are quintessentially French, being both elegant in form and layered in texture. Graduate students through professionals. P.
