The eighth edition of Mosby's Medical Dictionary defines over 50,000 terms and features some 2,400 high-quality color illustrations. It emphasizes nursing and allied health, and students in these disciplines likely will find it more useful than competitors such as Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary (31st ed., CH, Oct'07, 45-0604), Stedman's Medical Dictionary (electronic version, CH, Aug'07, 44-6579), or Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary (online version, CH, Sep'08, 46-0034). A number of entries address nursing diagnoses, Nursing Outcomes Classification terms, or nursing theorists. Some condition entries (e.g., delirium, mumps) have subsections on observations, interventions, and nursing considerations. Drug entries include subsections for indications, contraindications, and adverse effects. Many entries include pronunciation, and many prefixes and suffixes appear as entries (e.g., archi-, -oma). The dictionary opens with a detailed, 43-page color atlas of human anatomy. Other quick reference tools are found in the inside covers: an ASL alphabet, various abbreviation lists, and a list of high-risk drugs for pregnant women. Since the seventh edition (2006), 5,000 new entries have been added and 30,000 updated. Over 100 consultants, mostly in US academic nursing or allied health positions, contributed to the dictionary.
