CHOICE Review

With more than 4,000 entries, including 2,000 short biographical sketches of Civil War leaders both civilian and military, this dictionary remains the most comprehensive and consistently accurate reference tool on the American Civil War. In addition to the biographical sketches there are entries relating to campaigns and battles, naval engagements, weapons, issues and incidents, military terms and definitions, politics, literature, and statistics. The entries are arranged alphabetically and cross-referenced where appropriate. The publisher asserts that the work is "thoroughly revised" yet the bibliography adds only three new titles not found in the original 1959 edition. Even the acknowledgement page retains institutional affiliations (three decades old) of individuals now elsewhere and fails to denote as "the late" Bruce Catton, T. Harry Williams, Bell I. Wiley, and E.B. Long. The revised edition continues to credit abolitionist James G. Birney with the founding of the "Liberal Party" when in fact it was the "Liberty Party." Despite the contemporary publication of revisionist biographies of Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, and John Hunt Morgan, their entries remain unchanged. -F. R.
