The Somervell and Mier Expeditions of 1842, culminating in the famous "black bean episode" in which Texas prisoners drew white or black beans to determine who would be executed by their Mexican captors, still capture the public imagination in Texas. But were the Texans really martyrs in a glorious cause, or undisciplined soldiers defying their own government? How did the Mier Expedition affect the border disputes between the Texas Republic and Mexico? What role did Texas President Sam Houston play? These are the questions that Sam Haynes addresses in this very readable book, which includes many dramatic excerpts from the diaries and letters of expedition participants.

Includes bibliographical references (p.[245]-258) and index.

CHOICE Review

Written in "whip-cracking" style, this book presents in very readable fashion the facts about an incident in Texas history. The Somervell and Mier expeditions took place in 1842 as military forays into Mexico. Star-crossed before they even started, the men taking part were either killed or captured. The story of their captivity and the various attempts to free them are covered here. Haynes reveals the intricate diplomatic maneuvering among Britain, the US, Mexico, and the Republic of Texas over this affair. The author also demonstrates Sam Houston's political acumen as he coped with the different political situations, always with his goal of Texas' annexation by the US in mind. The book includes footnotes, two maps, and a section of photographs of many of the participants, as well as illustrations of some of the incidents that took place.
