A fascinating bibliography, containing more than 2,000 items, of Catholic novels and criticism of them in English and American literature. The bibliography of critical material includes both articles and books and investigates individual writers as well as the stream of the novel in general. In a comprehensive historical introduction, Menendez discusses the Catholic novel as propaganda, as social criticism, and as a key to character study. He sees it as both apologia and good reading, and discusses American writers from Orestes Brownson (himself a convert from Protestantism and Brook Farm) to Andrew Greeley, contemporary priest, sociologist, and mystery writer. Menendez appends a very subjective list of the 100 best Catholic novels. Good adjunct reading for courses in recent church history, but better for courses in literature or the psychology and sociology of religion. -H. T. Hutchinson, Duquesne University
