Israeli archaeologist Mazar (Institute of Archaeology, Hebrew U. in Jerusalem) introduces the achievements of the archaeological research in Israel and Jordan, and discusses its implications for our knowledge of the world of the Old Testament. He covers the period from the first permanent settlements to the destruction of the First Temple by Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian domination of the country. Acidic paper.

CHOICE Review

Archaeological investigations of Israel and Jordan continue to enlarge and complicate our understanding of the history and culture of ancient Palestine and of its monumental literary legacy, the Bible. The stated purpose of this volume is to present "a comprehensive, updated, and as objective as possible picture of the archaeological research of Palestine relating to the Old Testament period," i.e., from the earliest settlements (c. 10,000 BCE) to the destruction of the First Temple by the Babylonians in 586 BCE. The pace and growing sophistication of excavation, the fragmentary, esoteric, and often contradictory nature of the findings, and the balanced judgment and lucid style of the author (a leading Israeli archaeologist) make this a timely and successful venture from which scholars, would-be scholars, and general readers will profit. Of special value to the last group is Mazar's superb 34-page introduction to the technical realia of Palestinian archaeology; nothing better is currently in print. The rest of the volume unfolds chronologically, with individual sites described (to a greater or lesser extent) to illustrate patterns of the period or individual issues best or uniquely illustrated by that site. The maps and illustrations are effective. This is a companion volume for the highly regarded Anchor Bible commentary series and embodies the same high standards of accessible (and affordable) scholarship. Highly recommended. -W. B.
