Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This comparative history of American architecture, social spaces, and engineered environments--organized by style, and then by chronology--is for the general reader. Within its heavily illustrated pages, Tom Martinson traces two millennia of the built environment of this endlessly fascinating, extraordinarily expansive, and utterly diverse nation. Pairing vibrant photography with a rich knowledge of the history of architecture in America--from the Hopi and Colonial years to neomodernism, Robert A. M. Stern, and Zaha Hadid--the book is a comprehensive overview of styles and developments, as well as telling the story of a country through its buildings.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 508-513) and indexes.

CHOICE Review

This highly illustrated "hybrid guide," which explores 2,000 years of American architecture, city planning, landscape architecture, and civil engineering, evolved from the author's quest to create an ideal syllabus for an introductory American architecture course. The scope and heft of this guide, fueled by an "inclusive spirit," is impressive and "quintessentially American," as noted by architect Richard Meier in his foreword; it contains over 1,000 succinct encyclopedia-like entries encompassing the diversity of architecture in the US. Also quite impressive throughout the entire guide is the abundance of high-quality color illustrations in various sizes, a majority of which are photos taken by the author himself. In terms of organization, Martinson (independent scholar) first splits the guide into broad categories, such as "Pre-Columbian Environments, 10,000 BCE-1900 CE" and "City Planning, 1573-2004." Then the guide employs various subcategories, such as cultural eras, design disciplines, and regions, as its main organizing mechanism; furthermore, the entries within a subcategory are loosely arranged chronologically. Martinson offers a unique print reference resource for the subject of American architecture through his approach to organizing the material, and the decision to include so many lush color illustrations throughout. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Academic libraries supporting lower- and upper-level undergraduates; general readers. C. Caizzi Yale University Haas Family Arts Library
