From the Renaissance to the present day, each generation of artists, architects, and writers has used the powerful images of ruins to project its own vision of time and human destiny. The metamorphosis of the ruin motif in art explains not only the separations but the continuities between the perception of past and present that characterize the different art movements. Drawing from all media of Western art including garden design, photography, and fine art, Makarius explores the rich and diverse iconography of ruins from da Vinci to Van Gogh, from Botticelli to Roy Lichtenstein.Ruins is a reminder of history at a time when few art motifs still have the power to demand attention for our immense collective past-and at a moment when a reminder is sorely needed.

CHOICE Review

This ambitious pictorial depiction, with literary descriptions of ruins appearing in artworks as icons over about 600 years of Western art, collects some 182 engravings, paintings, and photographs of artworks residing in museum collections across Europe (with a few drawn from British and American as well as privately held collections). Makarius (The Sorbonne) skillfully composed a volume, translated into English from the French, presenting his thematic interpretation of ruins under four categories: the [ruin as] return to the antique, ruins and nature, man and ruins, and ruins and modernity. This volume easily can be said to represent a particular iconic aesthetic sensibility, and with study becomes an instructive collection of works focused on ruins as one component in artworks now scattered across time and space. It represents a reinterpretation of the ruin that persists in showing physical traces of civilizations long evaporated from the landscape, as well as ruins conceptualized by artists to represent an iconic residuum charged with symbolic and aesthetic dignity. Makarius notes that whereas ruins in a religious scene can be interpreted as defeat of paganism, in other contexts they can be viewed as architectural templates. Endnotes; illustrations list; alphabetical index of artists. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. General readers; upper-division undergraduates through faculty. M. Evans emeritus, SUNY Empire State College
