CHOICE Review

Luebke's work, a study of relations between the 400,000 Teuto-Brazilians living mostly in the South and the predominant Luso-Brazilian culture, is unique in the English-language literature. There are few studies at all of immigrant minority groups in Latin American history. The quest for unity has predominated since the colonial period, therefore subordinating pluralist expression in language, religion, and social customs. This monograph, which is based on research in German and Portuguese-language sources, fills an important need. It is well presented, with excellent maps and well-chosen photographs placed in the text. The bibliography and index are exhaustive. There is a useful comparison with the experience of Germans in the US in the same period of time. Upper-division undergraduates and above.-R.M. Levine, University of Miami
