Cataloging managers will find this book a valuable road map for navigating the metadata needs of the 21st-century library.

Demand for instant access, 24/7. Outsourcing issues. Constantly evolving standards. How can catalogers create a flexible, Web 2.0-compliant, flexible, multi-metalingual cataloging department? A daunting challenge, definitely; but with the right guidance, any cataloger can get up to speed and handle these common and confusing problems.

Each chapter of Practical Strategies for Cataloging Departments is authored or coauthored by a leader in cataloging, metadata practice, or education in these specialties. This book offers practical advice--based on direct experience--for facing the challenges of organizing information today. Topics include training, collaborating across the library, coping with changes in standards, making strategic selections of vendor cataloging products, developing cooperative organizations, and more. The specific techniques that will help catalogers meet the needs of 21st century patrons are emphasized.

Library Journal Review

Structural changes, changes in work flows, and creating metadata for digital materials-these are just a few of the adjustments that cataloging professionals are dealing with as cataloging practices continue to evolve in the 21st century. Drawing on the expertise of catalogers, metadata librarians, and educators, the contributions to this book by practicing specialists largely in academic libraries provide a balanced approach to addressing "some of the changes in cataloging and coding practices and the reasoning behind the decisions." While doing so, the authors also incorporate practical guidance on integrating these changes into daily work flows, designing training programs for current and future catalogers, and meeting the metadata needs of digital libraries. Lubas (director of cataloging & discovery svcs., Univ. of New Mexico Libs.) also includes discussions of alternative options such as outsourcing or collaboration locally between catalogers and other library departments or internationally through programs like Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). VERDICT Recommended for cataloging department managers and cataloging educators, both in library school and on the job.-Susan Ketcham, Long Island Univ. Lib., Brentwood, NY (c) Copyright 2011. Booklist Review

Edited by the director of cataloging and discovery services at the University of New Mexico Libraries, this volume brings together nine chapters authored by practicing librarians in the U.S. Among the topics covered are evolving standards, such as the transition from AACR2 to RDA, as well as issues related to training, outsourcing, and working with other library departments. Reusing MARC outside the integrated library system and planning and creating metadata standards for grant-funded digitization projects are also discussed. Each chapter includes a conclusion and a bibliography, although the book lacks a cumulative list of references. Based on practical experience, this guide provides a welcome introduction to current challenges and opportunities, especially for larger cataloging departments in academic libraries.--Marcus, Sar.
