Undergraduate text translated from the German edition of 1987, and derived from a course which has been offered at the University of Tubingen since 1979. In each of the nineteen brief chapters some physical problem (derived from the classical physics of oscillators, from central force motion, from non-relativistic quantum mechanics, etc.) is posed and subjected to numerical analysis/exploration. FORTRAN programs are abundant, and the book comes complete with a floppy disk, to be run on an IBM PC. Each chapter ends with a few exercies (with solutions) and references. CHOICE Review

Personal computers are increasingly making inroads into the undergraduate physics curriculum. Their uses range from data acquisition and analysis in laboratories to the solution of standard problems in advanced undergraduate courses. Theoretical Physics is one of several new books (e.g., see Numerical Recipes by W.H. Press et al., CH, Sep '86, and D.W. Heermann's Computer Simulation Methods in Theoretical Physics, 1986), which are desinged to function as texts or supplementary texts in course or research work where students learn to program and to exhibit the results geographically. This book requires an AT-level computer, a math coprocessor, EGA graphics, a Fortran compiler, and some familiarity with Fortran. The treatment seems pedagogically sound. The physics is formulated, the equations obtained and modified for computer use, and programs developed in an interactive way. Not all Fortran compilers will work. The enclosed disk summarizes the author's solutions to the problems. Most students would need a mentor at least occasionally, but the volume is essentially self-contained. It certainly belongs in a good college library. -K. L. Schick, Union College (NY)
