Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This comprehensive sourcebook makes available in the original Latin and Greek the principal extant texts required for the study of the Stoic, Epicurean and sceptical schools of philosophy. The material is organized by schools, and within each school topics are treated thematically. The volume presents the same texts (with some additional passages) as are translated in The Hellenistic Philosophers, Volume 1. The authors provide their own critical apparatus, and also supply detailed notes on the more difficult texts. This volume is equipped with a large annotated bibliography.

Bibliography: p. [249]-256.

CHOICE Review

The first edition of this book appeared in 1974 and quickly became the standard modern introduction to Hellenistic philosophy. Rightly so, since it offered the best account in any language of this remarkably productive, but too often neglected, period of ancient philosophy. Since then-among classicists and philosophers alike-there has been a strong resurgence of interest in Hellenistic philosophers, for which this book and its author deserve a large measure of credit. Although the present text remains unchanged from the 1974 edition (errata and all), it is still the best place for undergraduates as well as more seasoned scholars to become acquainted with Epicureanism, Stoicism, and Skepticism. Long has included in this new edition a judicious and helpful bibliography of recent work (197485) which, although useful to specialists, does not in and of itself justify acquisition by many libraries already holding the first edition. However, libraries without the first edition and those aiming at exhaustive coverage of ancient philosophy will need the second edition.-P. Mitsis, Cornell University
