CHOICE Review

Written primarily for textbook use, Lippard and Berg's book should be very useful at academic institutions offering coursework in bioinorganic chemistry. Their style of writing and the book's format are perfect for that audience. They provide excellent study-problem sets and extensive bibliographies at the end of each chapter; these bibliographies are divided into useful topic areas. Figures are in several colors and the ribbon diagrams of proteins are easy to visualize. The first four, introductory chapters are exceptionally good and include an overview, the relationship of coordination chemistry to bioinorganic research, properties of biomolecules, and physical methods of analysis. Each of the next eight chapters covers a specific area of research: choice and uptake of metal ions, control of metal ion concentrations, metal stabilization of biomolecular structures, binding of metal ions to active centers, electron transfer proteins, substrate binding and activation, atom transfer reactions, and protein tuning of active sites. Finally, a "frontiers" chapter indicates unsolved problems in each of the areas discussed in the text. Upper-division undergraduate through professional. W. H. Hohman; Marietta College
