Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The difficulties with addressing toxic air pollutants are the cheer number of compounds present in the atmosphere and their sources. The purpose of this book is to develop an approach to understanding toxic air pollutants through synthesis of the scientific results obtained in the Airbourne Toxic Element and Organic Substance (ATEOS) project.

CHOICE Review

Epidemiological studies indicate that air pollution is not generally a major cause of cancer in the US, but is it more significant in industrialized, urban regions? The State of New Jersey is a good location for testing this possibility since it is highly industrialized and is known to have unusually high cancer rates. This book consists of papers summarizing the ATEOS project, a New Jersey study designed to measure human exposures to pollutants suspected of causing cancer and other chronic diseases. Extensive atmospheric measurements were made in selected rural and urban areas of the state. Organic particulates were given special attention, since they are thought to be an important source of carcinogenicity. The results suggest that the health effects of local air pollution are more important than statewide conditions, even in a highly industrialized area. An excellent bibliography is provided as well as a useful table of abbreviations. Although the discussion focuses primarily on New Jersey, the methods and conclusions are sufficiently broad to make the book generally useful.-H.E. Pence, SUNY College at Oneonta
