Library Journal Review

This is a professionally compiled British dictionary of sports quotations with first-rate author and subject indexing. It contains ten pages of quotations on cricket and three each on baseball and football. There are numerous quotations from Shakespeare, but none from Yogi Berra or Casey Stengel. It is no help with the bane of Reference Departments everywhere: the source of the quotation for ``the game's not over til the fat lady sings.'' (The answer is Dick Motta.) With its European and scholarly emphasis this is a quality companion to the more popular compilation, Sports Quotations (McFarland, 1984), edited by Andrew J. Maikovich. Though there is still no single, good source for sports quotations, Liddle's dictionary is a step in the right direction. Dennis Dillon, Univ . of Texas at Austin Libs. (c) Copyright 2010.
