Library Journal Review

$40. ref Organized under 15,000 standard English synonyms, this thesaurus leads the user to alternatives that range widely in their proximity to standard English and appropriate usage context. The number of equivalents offered varies from one to several hundred; there are, for instance, 210 equivalents for stupid, including ``dork,'' `` non compos mentis ,'' and ``slow on the draw.'' The bibliography contains about 125 entries ranging from standard sources like Eric Partridge and William Safire, to topical glossaries, to individual television broadcasts. The working writer, whether student, copy writer, or other professional, will find this book useful when writing informally. It will also appeal to word buffs and other browsers. Stephen H. CHOICE Review

The uniqueness of this compilation is that some 150,000 slang equivalents are given for 12,000 English words. Standard slang dictionaries such as Eric Partridge's A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English (1984) and Harold Wentworth's and Stuart Flexner's Dictionary of American Slang (CH, Jun '67) give the lexical meaning of slang words or nonstandard English expressions. This thesaurus permits readers to deviate from standard English to use slang, idioms, or colloquialisms that may have greater effect. The 12,000 words and their slang synonyms were chosen for their contemporary usage from current sources. Each entry is identified by its part of speech; next come the slang words, followed by adequate cross-references to other entries. The origin of the slang word or examples of its use are not given. Since this is a volume on slang, it is to be expected that many of the words will be abusive, taboo, irreverent, uncensored, or explicit. Recommended for larger undergraduate reference collections that do not have Lester Berrey and Melvin Van den Bark's American Thesaurus of Slang (2nd ed., 1953). -J. B. St. Leger, Central Virginia Community College
